Professor Junker was invited by Professor Xu Yibing, Chair of the Visual Communication Design program, to create this mural while leading the workshop “Public Creation/Individual Roots: Design from the Inside Out.”

The professor hoped to use the massive wall as a canvas to fuse his understanding of Shanghai’s urban character, his respect for traditional Chinese culture, and his signature visual language, making this work a significant artistic endeavor during his visit to China. The mural is located on the main facade of the Text and Information Center, where the smooth, expansive wall provides ample space for expressing a grand narrative.

The mural depicts a barefoot figure wearing a Los Angeles baseball cap. Holding a net, the figure chases three birds carrying red silk ribbons across a field of  five-petaled plum blossoms. In the background, the graceful arc of the Graphic and  Information Center’s architecture is abstracted by the professor into a  rainbow‑like planar form that stretches across the upper part of the  composition, infusing the work with a bright rhythm. The professor sees  this graphic as a visual metaphor for hope—the building’s curve, like a  rainbow, holds the everyday life of the campus while pointing toward the  extension of future possibilities. The composition is dominated by crane-crown red, a hue symbolizing longevity, nobility and sanctity within Chinese culture.

Professor Junker embedded layered numerical symbolism to construct a dialogue between Eastern and Western cultures:

• Three birds: Representing Heaven, Earth and Humanity in Chinese philosophy; in Western tradition, they stand for past, present and future, or body, mind and spirit. Across civilizations, three symbolizes generation and connection.

• Five-petaled plum blossoms: Associated with the Five Elements and Five Blessings in China, while evoking the five human senses in Western culture.

• Solitary peony: Known as the King of Flowers, it symbolizes abundance, honor and prosperity, crowning the composition as the visual climax.

•The red silk carried by the birds remains just out of reach of the net. As the professor implies: the joy embodied in flight cannot be possessed — it can only be pursued.

The figure wearing a Los Angeles baseball cap serves as an honest marker of the professor’s identity. “This cap shows where I come from, not where I am going,” he explains.

During the creative process, he unexpectedly discovered that his signature visual style—clean contours, flat color blocks, symbolic human figures, and stylized ornamentation—shared a natural spiritual resonance with the art of Chinese paper-cutting. “I didn’t encounter a foreign culture; rather, I found a familiar language of expression within another civilization.”

He further interprets the figure and the net: “The net stands for the pursuit of joy, as well as the moment of recognition. You reach toward something seemingly distant, and along the journey, uncover a shared language you never anticipated.”

Work officially commenced on July 6. The professor marked the wall with chalk to sketch the outlines of figures, birds, plum blossoms and peonies.

From July 7 to 8, he began blocking in color, establishing the crane-crown red palette and building layered tones.

Between July 9 and 10 came detailed refinement: sharpening contours, adjusting color harmony and perfecting symbolic motifs. Workshop students volunteered to assist on-site, gaining firsthand experience of large-scale mural creation.

From July 11 to 12, Shanghai was affected by a typhoon. Despite windy, unsettled weather, the professor persisted in painting. Faculty and students passing by paused to observe, photograph and appreciate the work in progress, forming a distinctive campus scene amid the storm.

On July 13, the mural was fully completed. Wu Jun, Executive Dean, and Wang Hongjiang, Party Branch Secretary & Vice Dean of the School of Future Design, visited the site for exchanges, concluding this week-long creative practice.

After completion, Professor Junker shared his gratitude: “I would like to thank Shanghai Institute of Visual Arts and the Visual Communication Design program for extending the invitation and granting me the opportunity to create on this wall. This mural represents a dialogue between myself, this city and this school. I am especially thankful to every student who supported the workshop and mural painting. Your hands and enthusiasm have made this creative journey truly exceptional.”

Measuring 9.32 meters in height and 5.13 meters in width, this monumental mural has become one of the most recognizable landmarks at the SIVA Graphic and Information Center. More than an artwork, it stands as a key achievement of international artistic exchange initiated by the Visual Communication Design program, evidence of cross-cultural dialogue.

In the years ahead, it will remain on this wall, engaging every passerby in conversations about pursuit, joy, and the shared languages we discover beyond boundaries。
